5 Steps to a Healthier Life

It seems everyone is searching for a way to live a healthier life, whether it is through weight loss, exercise or eating right. There are many ways you can feel healthier in the short term, but to live a healthy lifestyle, you’ve got to make some lasting changes. Here are five ways you can rejuvenate your life and get to living healthier!

1. Eat Right
Eating right and getting the proper nutrition will not only help you stay healthy, but can also help you lose weight and feel better about yourself. According to the CDC, you can eat healthier by following these guidelines:

  • Include a variety of fruits, veggies and whole grains in your daily meals
  • Limit your intake of sugar, salt, fat, drinks and foods high in calories, and alcohol
  • Eat a balance diet (follow the guidelines on My Plate)

2. Get Moving!
Being active is essential to living a long, healthy life! The CDC recommends at least two and a half hours of physical activity per week. Include a variety of activities that increase your breathing and heart rates and build muscle. Kids and teens should be active for at least one hour per day.

3. Get a Check-Up!
You should visit your doctor at least once a year for a regular check-up, or as often as directed. If you are sick or experiencing any unusual symptoms, you should also pay the doctor a visit. Ask your doctor how you can reduce your risk for health problems.

4. Catch Some Z’s
Getting enough sleep is essential to good health, as well as emotional and mental well-being. The National Sleep Foundation says people who do not get enough sleep are more inclined to use health care services and develop psychiatric problems. Be sure to get seven to ten hours of sleep each night.

5. Make Friends
Being social may actual play a role in your health. Whether you volunteer in the community, belong to a club, or just meet up with friends, being social can benefit you. If you have close friends, they can serve as a support system, offering emotional encouragement in the times you need it. Being social can help you feel a sense of belonging and reduce your chances of depression and anxiety. Friends can also provide physical help if you are ill by helping you out around the house and being there for you.
